Here are the top 3 stories today in Columbus:
- Intuit, TurboTax’s parent company, has agreed to a $141 million settlement after finding it enticed low-income taxpayers into paying for tax services that should have been free. The settlement affects nearly 150,000 Georgia residents who paid for their federal tax returns through TurboTax for tax years 2016 through 2018. The amount each consumer receives depends on the number of tax years they qualify for, with most expected to receive between $29 and $30. (WSB-Atlanta)
- The Columbus Police Department is investigating two separate shootings that occurred in Columbus. The first incident involved a shootout on Interstate 185 South just past the Manchester Expressway exit, in which one person was injured. The police have arrested a suspect and the investigation is ongoing. In the second incident, a man was found with two gunshot wounds to the leg on Bowman Street in Columbus. Police received a call about the shooting around 3:00 p.m. It is not known if any arrests were made at the time or what led to the shooting. (WTVM)
- Columbus Mayor Skip Henderson has named Stoney Mathis interim chief of police. Mathis, a former Fairburn, Georgia police chief, begins his new role this week and will be responsible for managing the day-to-day running of the police department. With 30 years of law enforcement experience, Mathis has held leadership positions for 20 years. Mathis will replace Freddie Blackmon, the former boss who retired on April 30, and an executive search firm will be tasked with finding a permanent replacement. (WRBL)

- The Columbus Georgia Police Department is asking for the community’s help Locating critically missing person Cordale McKissic, 35. He disappeared at the 2400 block of Martin Luther King Blvd between 7:00 p.m. Saturday and 9:00 a.m. Sunday.
