GPS tracking helps British Columbia Police track a van stolen at gunpoint

Two men are in custody following a dynamic armed auto theft incident Sunday in the Lower Mainland.

It was not a car they stole at gunpoint, but a van that was driving on Cooney Road in Richmond.

The two armed suspects were reportedly wearing masks as they violently snatched the van from the driver and fled east on the Westminster Highway.

A message was sent to neighboring police departments in Delta, Surrey and Vancouver, but ultimately it was the van’s standard GPS tracking that helped locate the stolen vehicle.

Police found it on Highway 91 towards the Alex Fraser Bridge and followed it to Surrey where they eventually stopped the van and arrested a 29-year-old man.

The second suspect, a 27-year-old man, later surrendered himself to Surrey’s RCMP branch.

Sgt. Sergeant Simon Lee commended the actions of officers from all agencies involved in their efforts to work together to bring this incident to a safe and positive conclusion.

The Richmond RCMP Serious Crime Unit has taken over the investigation and the two suspects are being held in custody in court.
