“League of Gods,” a Chinese fantasy action film with lavish special effects and a cast of stars, took first place at the Chinese box office over the weekend. But his performance was more earthbound than celestial.
“League,” starring Jet Li, Fan Bingbing, Angelababy and Louis Koo, grossed $30.5 million in its first three days. That was well ahead of the leftover “Skiptrace” with Jackie Chan.
“League” took the top spot with an opening day of $11.6 million each day. After that, however, the score dropped and the lead over “Skiptrace” narrowed. “League” played to a whopping 70,000 showings per day, compared to around 47,000 for “Shiptrace,” giving the Chan adventure a higher per-screen average.
“Skiptrace” grossed $20.5 million. The cumulative total after 11 days stands at $109 million.
“Legend of Tarzan” took a distant third place with $5.52 million for the weekend. After 13 days, the value is $41.3 million.
Chinese animated film “Shen Mi Shi Jie Li Xian Ji 3” was the second-placed new opener. It managed $5.30 million over the weekend.
The Japanese animated film “Doraemon Nonita and the Birth of Japan” grossed $2.39 million. After 10 days, it has raised $14.5 million.
Other weekend slots went to “Girl of the Big House” ($1.65 million), “Cold War 2” ($1.20 million), “Big Fish & Begonia” ($!.15 million). ) and “A Busy Night” ($1.01 million). ) and “Sweet 16” with $640,000.
