Multi-agency search for missing person ends tragically after body found

Multi-agency search efforts in the Carolinas and Georgia ended tragically over the weekend when a person previously reported missing was found dead.

According to the Macon County Sheriff's Office in North Carolina, a resident of the Highlands-area community was reported missing on Thursday, February 8, 2024. On February 12, the Sheriff's Office announced in a Facebook post that the person was found dead on the evening of February 11 after an extensive search.

The Sheriff's Office said the family of the deceased would like to thank the following agencies and all volunteers for their search efforts:

  • Highlands Fire Department, Sky Valley-Scalys Mountain Fire Department, Cowee Fire Department, Cashiers Glenville Fire Department, Rabun County Fire Station 8, Glenville-Cashiers High Angle Team, Macon County Sheriff's Office, Highlands Police, South Carolina SAR Team (Canine Rescue Teams), USFS Law Enforcement, Macon County Squad 4

“The Highlands Fire Department, along with all other emergency services, did an excellent job,” Macon County Sheriff Brent Holbrooks said in the online press release. “The Macon County Sheriff's Office would also like to thank the public for their interest and concern in locating the Highlands resident.”

Out of respect for the family and their privacy, the sheriff's office said no names would be released because “there is no suspicion of foul play.”

“On behalf of Highlands Fire & Rescue and all agencies involved, I would like to express our deepest condolences to the family,” Highlands Fire Chief Ryan Gearhart said in the release. “I would like to thank each and every agency involved in this search for the utmost professionalism they demonstrated during this event. HF&R will be forever indebted to you. Thank you to this wonderful community for supporting us with food and beverages. We greatly appreciate it.”
