GPS Tracking: Bihar introduces GPS tracking for safe travel of women | Patna News

Patna: After Haryana and Telangana, Bihar on Thursday became the third state in the country to launch ‘Surakshit Safar Suvidha’ – a GPS-based, round-the-clock tracking system for safe travel of women.
With a simple call to Bihar Police on 112, women can activate the GPS tracking system so that the police can monitor their location and provide assistance in case of emergency.
Director General of Police (DGP) Alok Raj gave the green light to the first phase of the new initiative in the national capital that day.
In the first phase, the service was launched in six districts – Patna, Nalanda, Gaya, Bhagalpur, Begusarai and Muzaffarpur – as a pilot project called ‘Nidar Nari’ (brave woman).
Raj said other parts of the state will get the free service from September 15. “The main aim is to instill confidence among college students and working women. The district police will help the women where the 112 team is not available.”
According to the 112 team officials, Bihar receives more complaints than Haryana and Telangana. In the last two years, the 112 team in Bihar has helped over 2 million people. Of the over 1 million people who call the team every year, about 90% give positive feedback while 5-10% give satisfactory feedback.
Nirmal Kumar Azad, ADG (Technology and Mobile), said Bihar is the second state in the country where nearly 6,000 people get help from the 112 team every day. “The number of calls is expected to increase by more than 50% after the new facility becomes operational. Bihar Police has set up the 112 command control centre at Bailey Road in Patna. The policemen will work here in six-hour shifts. There will be a common monitor to check the whereabouts of the women.”
Over 100 channel call switching systems have been installed to ensure that the number is not busy even if several calls come in at the same time.
The model was launched in Haryana in 2023, followed by Telangana in 2024.
