A year ago, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) celebrated the launch of the Florida Purple Alert program. The Purple Alert is used to assist in the search for missing adults who have mental, cognitive, intellectual, or developmental disabilities and do not meet criteria for a statewide Silver Alert.
Since the program began in July 2022, 255 Purple Alerts have been issued and 250 people found.
Purple Alerts engages the public in the search for the missing person and provides a standardized and coordinated community response. “Thanks in large part to public participation, Purple Alert is a trusted resource in helping law enforcement agencies safely locate missing persons. Our Purple Alert program is a model for other states to adopt,” said FDLE Commissioner Mark Glass.
When Purple Alerts are issued, the information is distributed to citizens who have signed up to receive the alerts and, where appropriate, displayed on dynamic highway signs. The alerts are also posted on the FDLE public website.
