PORTAGE, MI – A dispute during a custody swap turned violent when a man allegedly stabbed another man multiple times, Portage Police said.
The suspect, a 19-year-old Portage man, is being held at the Kalamazoo County Jail pending charges.
The person who was stabbed, a 24-year-old man from Kalamazoo, was taken to a nearby hospital and was listed in critical condition.
Police first responded to a reported stabbing at 6:25 p.m. Monday, July 3, in a McDonald’s parking lot on Block 6900 of South Westnedge Avenue.
Police said the Portage man and Kalamazoo man were involved in a domestic dispute, while a custody swap took place between the Portage man and his sister’s ex-boyfriend.
The argument escalated into a physical altercation in which the portage man produced a knife and stabbed the other man multiple times in the back, police said.
Other people who came with each man then started fighting, leading to more injuries.
No further arrests were made and the investigation is ongoing.
