70-year-old man arrested for using GPS to locate his wife during a divorce
The New Year's peace was shattered for the citizens of Ahmedabad when a local tour operator was arrested for relentlessly violating his wife's privacy. A 70-year-old businessman named Sabbir Vora was arrested by the city's cybercrime department for installing a GPS tracking device in his wife's car for half a decade and is in the middle of a divorce.
A veil of innocence shattered
Vora, who runs a tour operating business, is no stranger to tracking vehicles. However, the use of this ability took a sinister turn when he decided to secretly monitor his wife's movements. The 65-year-old woman discovered the GPS device on December 2, 2023 and immediately reported it to the police. The ensuing investigation uncovered layers of domestic discord and distrust, revealing a husband who had resorted to extreme measures because of doubts about his wife's fidelity.
The GPS device, a product easily available online for Rs 5,000, was installed in the woman's car when she was away from her Paldi residence. Vora's confession to the police concerned not only his actions towards his wife, but also his intentions towards his son. He revealed plans to track his son's movements, citing his frequent demands for money as a reason for his suspicions.
Legal implications
With Vora's arrest, the allegations against him are serious. Under Sections 354 (D) (Stalking) and 66 (E) (Violation of Privacy) of the Indian Penal Code, Vora's actions portrayed him as a stalker and violator of privacy. The case has not only brought to light the discord in the couple's marriage but also raised concerns about increasing cases of invasion of privacy through the use of modern technology.
