Alberta introduces GPS tracking for high-risk offenders

The Government of Alberta is introducing a new electronic surveillance program aimed at reducing crime in Alberta.

“The Government of Alberta is keeping its promise and introducing a new ankle bracelet monitoring program in response to the country’s troubled bail system. “Ottawa’s ongoing catch and release policy forced the Government of Alberta to take additional measures to protect families and communities,” the province said in a news release.

Starting Wednesday (January 15), the ankle bracelet program will be used to keep high-risk and repeat offenders in check. It's called the Global Positioning System (GPS).

“Through this program, offenders and defendants who pose a risk to public safety may now be subject to 24-hour court-ordered electronic monitoring by Alberta Correctional Services as part of their community supervision conditions.”
