Alimony and Child Support – The Washington Post

The Justice Department has approved long-awaited guidelines for collecting alimony and child support payments from federal and military paychecks. Lawyers from the Civil Service Commission are currently reviewing the wording and instructions to the authorities should be published in a relatively short time.

In most states, the wages and pensions of federal and military employees can now be garnished to comply with court orders for child support. But many federal agencies refuse to process applications on the grounds that they are unfamiliar with the procedures. You will have these guidelines shortly.

Meanwhile, Defense, U.S. Postal Service, CSC, and Health, Education and Human Services have already implemented the program, using portions of employee, military and retiree paychecks and pension checks to pay court-ordered child support and support cases. Other agencies will need to get on the ball when the new CSC Justice guidelines are released.
