Alimony for the wife, but for dogs? Yes, 50,000 a month, says Mumbai court

A court in Mumbai has reportedly ordered a man to pay child support for his wife and their three dogs after he granted them a divorce over allegations of domestic violence by the wife.

The case concerns a 55-year-old divorcee whose appeal was that her husband should pay 50,000 a month in child support for three Rottweilers besides her.

The woman married in 1986 and moved to a town in southern India with her husband. Her two daughters are married abroad.

In 2021, after separating from her husband, the woman came to Mumbai. In the petition, the woman explained that she has a long-term illness and has no way of earning money.

The woman’s husband had previously assured her that he would provide for maintenance and basic needs.

In the petition, the woman said: “Among other needs, my three Rottweiler dogs also depend on me. Therefore, I should receive an alimony of 70,000 rupees every month.”

The woman’s husband said it was not his fault, his wife left home of her own free will.

The husband said he had lost his business and was therefore unable to support her.

Although he had previously given the woman some money.

What did the court say?

Pets are also an essential part of a civilized lifestyle and necessary for a healthy human life.

“Dogs fill in any emotional gaps created by broken relationships resulting from divorce,” the court statement said.

There is no concrete evidence that the husband has suffered a business loss, so he cannot shirk his responsibilities, the judge added.

“Pets make you happy. Therefore, the woman should be granted alimony of 50,000 rupees per month,” the judge added.
