Allahabad High Court hears 'Kalyug' in elderly couple's maintenance case

In a recent maintenance case involving an elderly couple, the Allahabad High Court made a striking observation, suggesting that such legal disputes signal the beginning of 'Kalyug' – the Hindu era of strife and moral decay.

The case centers on 80-year-old Munesh Kumar Gupta, a retired health supervisor, and his 76-year-old wife. Their dispute over property, which has been ongoing since 2018, led to a police operation and separate living conditions. The woman then applied for monthly maintenance of Rs 15,000 out of Gupta's Rs 35,000 pension.

A family court initially ordered Gupta to pay Rs 5,000 in maintenance, a decision he challenged in the Supreme Court. During the hearing on February 20, Justice Saurabh Shyam Shamshery expressed dismay and said, “It seems that Kaliyug has arrived. Such litigation is a cause for concern.”

The court issued a notice to the wife, expressing hope for an agreement between the couple before the next hearing. This case highlights the growing concern about family disputes among the elderly in India and reflects changing social dynamics and values.
