Ananya Panday is busy promoting her upcoming film Gehraiyaan. Co-starring Deepika Padukone, Siddhant Chaturvedi, and Dhairya Karwa, the movie revolves around infidelity in modern relationships. In a recent interview with The Times Of India, Panday shared her views on the subject and it was a mature understanding of relationships and their complexities.

In the movie Gehraiyaan, Panday plays the role of Tia, a young woman whose fiancé Zain (Chaturvedi) cheats on her when he begins an illicit relationship with her cousin Alisha (Padukone). The story revolves around the four lead characters and how they deal with infidelity. In the interview, Panday said that infidelity isn’t a modern issue but one that’s being approached through different lenses in cinema now.

“I honestly don’t think it’s a modern issue. I feel like it’s a thing that has always existed in our society. Maybe, we are acknowledging it more now, maybe we are talking about it more now. I think it’s a start, a subject that we are addressing in cinema with Gehraiyaan. I feel like our film is different from other films that dealt with infidelity, because it’s not about finding your soul mate after marriage, it’s kind of just observing how four people are behaving in such a situation. Personally, infidelity is a huge deal breaker for me. But I have been listening to what everyone has been saying, and I guess it does totally depend on the situation,” she said.
Panday is right in observing that filmmakers are slowly changing the way they perceive infidelity. In the past, movies like Silsila, Murder, Arth and Life In A…Metro have tried to showcase infidelity as a gray area in relationships. However, they haven’t been able to offer their stories without a sense of moral judgment between right and wrong. Shakun Batra’s Gehraiyaan might be able to do that.

In the interview, Panday also agreed that while infidelity is a deal-breaker for her right now, she might feel differently about it as she grows older and experiences life more: “Maybe when I am older, I might feel differently but I honestly don ‘t think that I have been through enough in life or I have been through experiences to change that opinion right now. I am constantly evolving, I am constantly changing.”
She continued, “I don’t think that even a year back, I would have this much of an open understanding of what modern relationships are supposed to be and I think one needs to do what makes them happy and what’s going to help them grow. It might seem selfish sometimes but I feel like, in the long run, it might benefit people, they might not understand at that moment but you might be helping someone when you distance yourself from a situation and you see it from the outside.”

Panday’s perception of the situation is as mature as it gets. As human beings, we might like to believe that life should exist in black and white but more often than not, it’s grey. How we may feel about love and relationships in our 20s might be starkly different from how we feel about it in our 30s, 40s, and so on. It’s refreshing to see a young actor like Panday keep an open perspective and let life guide her path.
