Are you able to renew your driver’s license when you’ve got alimony in Buenos Aires?

Any citizen of the province of Buenos Aires who registers debts in the food quota cannot renew the driver’s license, the mandatory document for driving behind the wheel of motor vehicles, also known as “registration”.

Framed in Article 5 of Provincial Law 13.074, the application for a driver’s license or its renewal is granted provisionally for forty-five days with the obligation to regulate their situation within this period in order to obtain the definitive one.

If the citizen is still registered as a food debtor after 45 days of the provisional license being valid, they will not be able to process a new license because the provincial licensing system will block the new renewal process unless a court decision orders otherwise.

“The aim of this measure is to help fight non-compliance with child support payments, alternatively to pervert the will of the debtor father/mother and ensure that quota payments are respected,” the provincial authorities said. “The only beneficiary of food debt regularization is the child or young person who receives it,” they assert.

The same article prohibits food debtors from opening checking accounts, renewing credit cards, conducting any type of banking, and allowing businesses to open.

Here’s how to ask for debt-free eating

The application for the debt-free certificate is made through the provincial self-government portal at https://rdam.mjus.gba.gob.ar. You must select the “Request Certificate” button to start the process.

The applicant will be asked for an email address to which they have free access. If you complete the request within a period of up to 48 business hours, you will receive the corresponding digitally signed certificate in this field.

If you don’t receive the email, you will need to check your “junk” or “spam” folder. If the requester wishes, they can add the sender as Not Spam so that it can be sent to their inbox in the future. At the same URL, you have the option to verify the authenticity of a certificate that has already been issued by clicking on “Verify Certificate” where you will be asked for the data that appears in the header of the certificate.
