Before Karl Malone ‘spookily hit on’ Kobe Bryant’s wife Vanessa, he avoided paying $125 in child support to a 13-year-old after heinous crime: ‘The sum was too much’

Karl Malone is a rather controversial figure in the NBA. He was notorious for being creepy towards women, and there was an incident involving Kobe Bryant’s wife, Vanessa Bryant. However, this was only the tip of the iceberg. Malone already had a rather dark past before turning pro in the NBA. Malone is a graduate of Louisiana Tech. When he returned to Summerfield as a sophomore, he had impregnated a 13-year-old girl named Gloria Bell. The most disturbing aspect of this heinous act was that Karl Malone denied all allegations and refused to acknowledge the child’s paternity. When Gloria’s family took legal action against Malone, he even refused to pay alimony of $125 a week, according to Three-Ring Circus.

Bell gave birth to Demetress, who would go on to have a career as an offensive tackle in the NFL.

Karl Malone once refused to pay $125 in alimony for a 13-year-old’s pregnancy

In the book Three-Ring Circus, Jeff Pearlman mentions a bizarre incident when Karl Malone got a 13-year-old girl pregnant. At the time, Malone was a 20-year-old sophomore at Louisiana Tech and a future NBA star. Pregnant baby girl Gloria Bell gave birth to future NFL offensive tackle Demetress Bell on May 3, 1984.

This wasn’t the first time Malone had hurt a woman. When he was 17, he got pregnant with a girl from his hometown. When the girl gave birth to twins, Malone denied being a father. This story was uncovered by a newspaper years later.

In the case of Gloria Bell, the girl’s family went to court when Malone denied the child’s paternity. The court ordered the mailman to pay him $200 a week in child support. However, Malone simply disappeared from the scene immediately after this incident.

After the paternity test came back positive, the court ordered Malone to pay him $125 a week, which equates to $6,250 a year. However, the postman, who earned around $825,000 from the Jazz, refused, arguing that the sum was too high.

Malone’s creepy behavior haunted him until the end of his NBA career, with one incident involving Kobe Bryant. In his final season with the Lakers, Malone was the only person to support Kobe Bryant’s position on the team during his sexual harassment trial. However, there was one instance where he made a lewd comment to Kobe’s wife, Vanessa.

In 2004, Malone arrived at the Staples Center wearing a cowboy hat. Kobe found the outfit amusing and asked the postman what he was looking for. To which he replied:

“I’m looking for little Mexican girls.”

This comment made Kobe visibly uncomfortable, as Kobe’s wife is of Mexican descent. This is an example of how Malone continued to be a jerk even in the final days of his NBA career.

The Mailman is still respected by the NBA despite his controversial and dark past

There were several isolated cases that proved the nature and behavior of Karl Malone. He has also been involved in incidents in which he has been accused of harassment. However, Karl Malone commented to the Salt Lake Tribune:

“I don’t care. This is my life, this is my private life and I’ll deal with how I had to deal with everything. Whatever.”

Malone went unpunished for his heinous acts. Instead, he received multiple honors from the NBA. You can find his and John Stockton’s statue in front of the Energy Solutions Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah. Malone was one of the NBA’s guests of honor at the Utah All-Star Game this February.

This has prompted many fans to keep calling for action against the former jazz star. Online NBA fans have often been outraged by the unnecessary and underreported attention The Mailman receives despite having a dark past that has affected several women.
