A custody swap at a Bessemer park ended in gunfire Sunday afternoon, killing one person and seriously injuring another.
The shooting took place at 1:10 p.m. at McNeil Park in Bessemer’s Pipe Shop.
Lt. Christian Clemons said a mother and her new boyfriend were meeting with the children’s father and father’s brother to swap custody when an argument broke out.
The children are 2 and 5 years old. You weren’t hurt.
The mother’s boyfriend, the children’s father and the father’s brother all fired shots, Clemons said.
The children’s father and the mother’s new boyfriend were injured. They were taken to the UAB in Birmingham.
The mother’s boyfriend was pronounced dead at the hospital. The children’s father is in critical condition.
The father’s brother is in custody.
No identities are published yet.
The murder is Bessemer’s 11th murder this year and the 143rd in all of Jefferson County.
