CARMEL, NY — Fresh from an egg hunt demonstration for families sponsored by Carmel’s Parks and Recreation Department, Officer Vincent DeSantola and K9 Pietro answered a service call Monday and found a missing person in Somers.

At 3:35 p.m., the duo were called to assist local and state police in the search for a 60-year-old adult at risk who had been missing for over an hour.

The man had a cell phone, but the battery was dead, making the search difficult.

PO DeSantola started the route and K9 Pietro led him for almost a mile – along roads, through
several backyards and finally into a wooded area where he found the missing person
3:53 p.m. The man was evaluated by emergency services and then returned safely to the care of his family, police said.

To show their gratitude, family members stopped by Mahopac Police Headquarters with treats for the police.

“Thanks for the thoughtful snacks (for Pietro and us humans too!) sent to us by the family,” department officials said. “We’re happy to help!”

The Carmel Police Department rebuilt its canine department in 2022 after a 10-year hiatus. K9 Pietro, a Czech Shepherd Dog, was named in memory of a member of the department, the late Gary Pietropaolo Jr.
