Child custody exchange results in shots fired, police say

Two people were shot on the 1500 block of North Arbogast Street in Griffith on Friday evening, a news release states.

GRIFFITH — Two people were shot on the 1500 block of North Arbogast Street in Griffith on Friday evening, a news release states.

At approximately 6:30 p.m. Friday, the Griffith Police Department responded to a report of shots fired. The news release said the responding officer was flagged down by a motorist who advised his vehicle had been shot at.

The officer determined two people had gunshot wounds, but were found to be non-life threatening.

“The initial investigation revealed that the victims had gone to the area of 1500 N. Arbogast for a child custody exchange and were met by a known subject who fired a single gunshot into the vehicle that struck both the passenger and the driver,” the news release said.

Two individuals were later identified and taken into custody. Charges are pending with the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office, police said.

Griffith police said this appears to be a targeted event, and there’s no reason to believe there is a threat to the public. Assisting agencies included Indiana State Police, the Highland Police Department and the Lake County Sheriff’s Department.
