‘City on a Hill’ Season 3 Episode 3 Recap: Jackie Rohr’s infidelity in focus as Showtime drama picks up steam

It took all but three episodes to show Jackie Rohr’s infidelity on Season 3 of City on a Hill. With Joanne Kelly’s Letitia Dryden giving him the kiss of death, it’s a fairly familiar story for the Rohrs. If Episode 2 was all about a grieving Decourcy Ward (Aldis Hodge), then that goes into this chapter. But the main focus is on Rohr (Kevin Bacon) and Letitia and the dire consequences of their affair.

It’s their steamy affair that’s concentrated in an episode that otherwise does enough to show where each character is at with their respective issues. Jenny (Jill Hennessey) is full of mixed feelings. She must deal with her daughter Benedetta’s absence after the teenager reaches college, and also with her father’s assault charges after she kicked him in the face. An event from Sioban’s (Lauren E. Banks) past catches up with her after her friend dies, leaving her next of kin behind. Ward is coming to terms with his father’s death as he should.

In all of this, no character has emerged from the doldrums. The series is picking up steam, but overall the storylines are still torn and that makes the fourth chapter all the more interesting. With Letitia seducing Rohr, it’s safe to say he’s in bed with sharks and it’s only a matter of time before his faltering moral compass works again. In the final minutes of the episode, catching Sinclair Dryden (Corbin Bernsen) escorting another drugged woman, it’s time for the former FBI agent to put things together.

City on a Hill has always been about relationships. This season is about how sometimes broken relationships can still get an individual stuck. Siobhan’s horrifying past only adds to her already ongoing trauma, making her one of the more complex characters this time around. Along with their handling of a high pressure case, things aren’t looking good for the Wards either. The highlight of the season so far has been Bacon’s new appearance, but the superstar potential will be Banks as her character is the busiest at the moment.

Compare her arc to previous seasons, it’s about how she comes through life unscathed, especially after practically being involved in a crime. Will she find inner peace? Or will this have a domino effect on Decourcy, who will have to deal with his own pressures? It’s all happening in City on a Hill as the series picks up steam episode by episode.

New episodes of City on a Hill air Fridays on Streaming/Demand and Sundays at 10:00 p.m. ET on Showtime.
