Custody exchange in Port St. Lucie leads to shooting, arrest

PORT ST. LUCIE – A 40-year-old Port St. Lucie man was arrested Thursday evening after gunfire occurred during a custody exchange, according to law enforcement officials.

Nobody was injured.

Jason Stefanik, of the 1600 block of Southwest Buttercup Avenue, was charged with attempted first-degree murder after officers were called to his home at 5:39 p.m. Thursday, police Sgt. Dominick Mesiti.

Investigators determined that a man had arrived at the front door of the home to pick up his child as part of a custody exchange when Stefanik came from outside the home and a physical altercation began.

At some point, Stefanik walked into his home while the other man walked back to his vehicle parked in the driveway.

Stefanik then stepped outside his house with a handgun and shot at the other man who was standing next to his vehicle, but Stefanik missed his target and hit an empty vehicle parked across the street.

Stefanik remained in the St. Lucie County Jail without bail Friday morning.
