Princess Diana’s marriage to Charles was not ended by the BBC Panorama interview, but by “infidelity, deceit and lies,” as a royal expert has claimed.
Martin Bashir’s infamous interview was heavily criticized for tricking Diana into speaking using fake bank accounts.
Prince William said the interview fueled his mother’s “fear, paranoia and isolation” in the last few years of her life and damaged her relationship with Charles.
While his brother Harry said, “The ripple effect of a culture of exploitation and unethical practices ultimately cost her her life.”
Earl Spencer said police should investigate the circumstances of the interview after Lord Dyson’s report found there was a “serious breach” of the BBC’s producer guidelines.

But royal expert Robert Jobson told a podcast that he feels the Panorama interview is now being taken out of context. He said that no matter how much fraud was used to bring it about, it didn’t change anything.
“This was a bombshell interview that changed history. Yes, the way it was received and covered up was wrong, but what she had to say she would have said anyway,” he told Heirpod.
“I think the royals are a little insincere trying to rewrite the narrative, and for William, a future king, I find it a little unhealthy for him to say what should and shouldn’t be repeated.”
Jobson said the marriage was on the rocks anyway and both couples betrayed each other.

“I think Diana is probably looking back […] and thought maybe I was wrong then, but it was her truth at the time, it was what she wanted to say then, “said Jobson.
“Yes, it did lead to the Queen saying the divorce had to take place, but let’s face it, the fact that both Charles and Diana slept with other people meant that marriage was going to end in divorce anyway.
“You cannot have an adulterous marriage in which both parties betray each other and expect that marriage to last, and I find it ridiculous to say in any other way that Panorama changed everything.

“No, Panorama was pivotal at one point, it certainly didn’t cause the marriage to end. What caused the marriage to end was the infidelity cheating and lies that both parties participated in.”
He also questioned the royals’ claims that the BBC interview manipulated them.
“We almost canonize Diana as that innocent kid. Diana was a smart biscuit when it came to the media world. She knew how to play media,” Jobson said.
