Dixon Republican Representative Tom Demmer has passed a bill to prevent Illinois from requiring digital license plates for vehicles that could be tracked via GPS. Demmer says the bill is in response to the movement to track vehicles to find them after carjackings.

Demmer says the ability to track any vehicle in Illinois with a state license plate is a significant government encroachment on people’s daily lives.

The bill was tabled on June 28th. So far it has three Republican sponsors, including Demmer, and one Democratic sponsor.

Demmer represents Sandwich and other parts of DeKalb, Ogle, Lee and LaSalle counties.
