Georgian police are investigating the murder of the ex-girlfriend of the former mayor of Batumi.
Anastasia Shatalova, a 26-year-old Russian citizen, was reportedly shot and killed in the Saburtalo district of Tbilisi on Sunday evening.
While the Interior Ministry has remained silent so far, local media reported that police officers searched and secured items from Zurab Beridze’s apartment in Batumi. Beridze was Deputy Mayor of Batumi from 2013 to 2015.
News agency Batumelebi quoted Paata Shavadze, who previously represented the deceased, said Batumi City Court released Beridze on bail of 50,000 yen ($ 16,000) about three months ago after the former officer was involved in domestic violence against Shatalova and her daughter.
According to Shavadze, the authorities had also issued an injunction against Beridze, but it had expired at the time of the murder.
It is not yet clear whether Beridze is charged or was in any way involved in Shatalova’s death.
Anastasia Shatalova became known to the public afterwards appear on the popular Georgian television show “Nanuka’s Show” in September 2020. During the interview, she claimed that her husband had been violent towards her and her child and had also threatened them with his weapon.
In the same interview, Shatalova claimed that Beridze had a family of her own, which she only discovered when she became pregnant and moved from Tbilisi to Batumi.
Shatalova also claimed last year that Beridze bugged her home and cell phone, as well as a babysitter’s, and refused to see her ten-month-old daughter.
Shatalova admitted trying to blackmail Beridze to get her child back, which resulted in an injunction against her.
