Former hedge fund CEO fails to deduct $51 million in alimony

The former Minneapolis hedge fund CEO can’t deduct $51 million in alimony to his ex-wife because the payments were settlements that would continue after her death, the Eighth Circuit said on Friday.

Andrew Redleaf, a former founding partner of Whitebox Advisors LLC, began divorce proceedings with Elizabeth Redleaf in 2007. They entered into a marriage annulment agreement in which Andrew Redleaf would pay Elizabeth Redleaf $140 million over the next five years and items such as their family homes and vehicles, and Elizabeth Redleaf would waive the right to permanent spousal support.
