Gabrielle Union-Wade shares transparent moments of life in her new memoir, You Got Anything Stronger. One of those life-changing chapters came when her husband, Dwyane Wade, confessed to having an affair with another woman and having a baby with her.
“To say I’m devastated means choosing a word on a low shelf for simplicity,” the 48-year-old wrote, according to PageSix. “There are people – strangers I will never meet – who got upset that I had never talked about this trauma.”
Union wrote about the trauma and embarrassment and learned from it at a time when she was trying to figure herself out. The Shady Baby writer told Essence that she had 8 or 9 miscarriages and multiple rounds of failed IVF. In 2016 she was diagnosed with adenomyosis, a disease of the lining of the uterus.
“The experience that Dwyane had a baby so easily while I was unable not only to break my soul to pieces,” she wrote, “but shattered into fine dust that was scattered in the wind.”
The couple broke up briefly in 2013 before getting engaged that same year. Actress Deliver Us From Eva confessed that they were “not in a good place” at the time of conception of the baby. But she added that they were “much better” when he finally told her.
“I had no words, and even after countless therapies, I’m not sure I have them now,” she wrote. “But the truth matters.”
The couple eventually decided to resolve their problems privately and got married in August 2014. The two began dating in 2008. Union wrote that Wade worked to be forgiven every day and she chose to “love him and forgive him”. But she wondered if the woman she is now would have been able to take him back.
“The advice I would give myself now is to go,” she wrote. “Today’s me would not have stayed with him, but would I be who I am now without this pain?”
Despite the hardships, the couple has grown. In June they launched a baby and diaper line called PROUDLY. In 2018, they welcomed their daughter Kaavia through surrogacy. Together they raise Zaire (19), Zaya (14) and Xavier (7) from Wade’s previous relationships.
