Gentleman Jack fans have been dying to see Ann Walker and Anne Lister finally get their happy endings, but will it really happen?

In recent weeks, the BBC drama has shared glimpses of the first few months of married life following Walker’s (Sophie Rundle) and Lister’s (Suranne Jones) secret union.

However, since the year is 1834, things have not gone as smoothly as they had hoped, culminating in Lister briefly rekindling her romance with ex-lover Marianna Lawton (Lydia Leonard) when she paid her a visit resigned at Lawton Hall.

Since then, Lister has kept the passionate night a secret, not telling Walker what really happened.

But in Sunday night’s final, she is finally questioned by her partner about her stay at Lawton Hall.

In a clip shared exclusively with Metro.co.uk, the couple find themselves in a tense exchange on their way back to London and it’s clear Walker isn’t happy with her wife’s attitude.

Lister lists all of the things her partner was able to enjoy during their stay, including “a visit to the dentist” as she reminded them this was a chance to get away.

“No it was not. It was for you to see your friends,” Walker retorted, leading Lister to hit back, “Oh, so none of those other things happened.”

“I don’t get sifted for money,” her wife replied. “We said our arrangement would be as good as marriage.”

“As far as possible, yes,” Lister remarked.

In a very emphatic response, Walker said: “You should have taken me to your friends.

“I’m your wife when it’s cheap, when you need money, in bed, but when it comes to your aristocratic people I’m a nuisance.

She then brought up Marianna and got a surprised Lister to repeat her ex’s name to her partner.

“I know there was more to it that night when you came back from Lawton Hall,” Walker said. ‘The damage is done, I saw you in your true face.’

But Lister came back struggling: ‘I got you an appointment with the king’s surgeon. Not only because he’s the king’s surgeon, but because he’s also the leading expert on jaw pain, which I’ve taken the trouble to find out for you.
