Go on! ‘Scott Pilgrim’ comics acquired anime adaptation on Netflix

Bryan Lee O’Malley’s Scott Pilgrim comics have a loyal following, but most people know them from the 2010 film adaptation Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Despite the popularity of the film, the Michael Cera-directed flick never got a sequel. However, it seems that fans will soon be able to revisit the world in a different format: an anime coming to Netflix.

Right, the sex bob ombs are making a comeback! They’ll just be a little bit more animated this time around.

On January 7th, The Hollywood Reporter announced that Netflix and UCP would be joining forces to bring fans an anime adaptation of the Scott Pilgrim comics. More than 10 years after the popular film hit theaters, new content is undoubtedly welcome. And fans will be delighted to learn that series creator Bryan Lee O’Malley will write, run the series, and serve as one of its showrunners.

He will do this with showrunner and executive producer BenDavid Grabinski. Grabinski directed Nickelodeon’s Are You Afraid of the Dark? Reboot, and he wrote for the films Skiptrace and Happily. According to THR, the duo will partner with Studio Science SARU to bring the anime to life.

If all goes according to plan, fans of O’Malley’s six comic strip series could see a new version of it soon.

What are the ‘Scott Pilgrim’ comics about?

For those who don’t remember Scott Pilgrim’s premise – or just haven’t been immersed in previous iterations of the story – O’Malley’s comics follow a young guitarist who takes on the seven exes of his crush. Scott Pilgrim must defeat them all to win the heart of Ramona Flowers. And every member of the League of Evil Exes has it all.

Colorful and with video game references, Scott Pilgrim is an ideal choice for an anime. There’s plenty of dramatic action, and it’s easy to imagine it coming to life in this format. Add a top-notch soundtrack and Netflix should have no problem recapturing fans.

But if there’s so much interest in the world of Scott Pilgrim, why didn’t Universals’ 2010 film never get a sequel?

There has been much discussion over the years about a sequel to Scott Pilgrim, but a sequel never materialized. Stars like Michael Cera and Mary Elizabeth Winstead have repeatedly expressed interest in repeating their roles. And director Edgar Wright even confirmed discussions about a sequel in a feature with Entertainment Weekly.

What happened to those conversations is unclear, but Brandon Routh – who plays Todd Ingram in the film – told the Geek House Show that he wasn’t sure O’Malley wanted a sequel:

“I just don’t think Bryan Lee O’Malley, who wrote the books – the wonderful books – is thinking about a sequel. Will we see Scott Pilgrim in another iteration? It could be used. Telling a similar story could be done in a different way, I suppose. I don’t know of any sequel.”

Fans may never know if he is right about the creator’s wishes. But it seems he predicted the future in terms of one more iteration of the story. We’ll stay tuned for more updates on the Scott Pilgrim anime out on Netflix – including casting news and information on a possible release date.
