UTICA, NY – Oneida County has launched a new online GPS map that allows residents to monitor the status of snowy roads before they hit the road.
Residents can now track Oneida County Department of Public Works snow plows with an online GPS map.
“This technology will allow our residents to see when and where roads are being cleared and salted by county vehicles,” said Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente.
“Our new GPS tracking map will aid travel planning during the winter months, making it safer and more convenient,” he said. “We are constantly looking for ways to be more innovative and provide the best possible service to our residents.”
The County DPW has 28 trucks that plow and salt over 400 miles of state-owned roads.
“OCDPW does not provide snow and ice removal for municipal roads in villages, towns, or the cities of Utica and Rome,” the new technology said in a press release.
GPS tracking only occurs on district-owned plows and on the routes for which they are responsible.

More about GPS tracking:
“Locating is initiated when the vehicle’s salt spreaders are active. The map provides an address search function and allows residents to search by day and time. The live function of the map works with a delay of 10 minutes. The vehicles’ GPS system also offers a DPW function with real-time mechanical status monitoring, improving safety for drivers and the public,” said a press release.
