UTICA, NY – Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente Jr. has announced that the public can now track Oneida County Public Works Department vehicles using online GPS technology as they clear snow and ice from their roads .

“This technology will allow our residents to see when and where roads are being cleared and salted by county vehicles,” Picente said in a news release from his office. “Our new GPS tracking map will support travel planning during the winter months, making it safer and more convenient. We are constantly looking for ways to be more innovative and provide the best possible service to our residents.”

OCDPW operates 28 vehicles that plow and salt a total of over 400 miles of state-owned roads. He also plows all county roads in the cities of Augusta and Florence. OCDPW does not provide snow and ice removal for municipal roads in villages, towns, or the cities of Utica and Rome.

The county contracts with towns and villages to plow and salt most county roads within their communities. GPS tracking is only available for county-owned plows and the routes they are responsible for.

The pursuit is initiated when the vehicle's salt spreaders are active. The map offers an address search function and allows residents to search by day and time. The live function of the map works with a delay of 10 minutes.

The vehicles' GPS system also provides DPW with real-time monitoring of mechanical condition, increasing safety for drivers and the public.

“I am excited about the opportunities this new technology brings to the county and our residents,” said OCDPW Commissioner Matthew Baisley. “County Executive Picente is committed to efforts to provide better and more efficient services to our community.”
