Gunfire erupts in custody swap, three are taken to hospital, Matthews police say

According to Matthews Police, three adults have been hospitalized and two men arrested after gunfire broke out during a custody swap in Windsor Park, southeast of Charlotte.

It happened around 12.15pm on Sunday and investigators believe all three victims will survive.

According to investigators, the domestic dispute began when two groups of adults met in the Windsor Park parking lot for a “child swap.”

“Communications received a call from a man explaining that while he was in the car with his girlfriend at Windsor Park, he had just been shot at by his girlfriend’s ex-husband and ex-husband’s brother,” she said police with.

The victim drove away and reported that the suspects – identified by police as Michael Isaiah McDonald, the 23-year-old ex-husband and his brother Christopher O’Bryan McDonald, 20 – began following him. They dodged as the victim entered the Matthews Medical Center parking lot, officials said. The victim was treated for a gunshot wound to the wrist, and a woman in his car “was treated and released for injuries she sustained from shattered glass and a physical assault,” officials said.

A Matthews police officer located the suspect vehicle and during a traffic stop on East Independence Boulevard found the driver had “a significant injury to his arm,” officials said.

“The officer immediately applied a tourniquet to slow/stop the bleeding until medical personnel could arrive,” police said.

The police found the ex-husband, his two children and his brother in the vehicle. The suspect’s condition is currently stable.

On Monday, Matthews police officers announced that both McDonalds were arrested and charged with two counts each: attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, aggravated conspiracy and firing a firearm within city limits. Both men are being held at the Mecklenburg County Jail.
