Investigators uncover a GPS tracker and pipe bombs whereas investigating the alleged double murder in Lenexa

LENEXA, KS (KCTV) — Court records show investigators found pipe bombs and a GPS locator while investigating an alleged double-murder suicide in Lenexa.

Lenexa police were called to a home near Laurelwood Street and Renner Blvd around 1:20 a.m. Sunday, according to a search warrant issued during the investigation. They found three people with gunshot wounds in a bedroom.

Police searched the Belton home of suspected gunman Dustin J. Johnson on Tuesday. Investigators believe Johnson shot and killed John Williamson and Sara Beck before taking his own life. He was wearing a tactical vest at the time of the shooting. Johnson had a rifle that was assembled from various parts and had no serial number.

Police say when crime lab analysts searched the vehicle Johnson drove to the scene, they found a GPS tracking device and several pipe bombs built as improvised delayed-action grenades. The devices were packed with fishing weights made of lead and black powder.

Court records show that investigators seized black powder, ammunition, bomb-making books and other explosives-making materials from Johnson’s Belton duplex near East 170th Street and Bel-Ray Blvd. The list of items confiscated included magnesium strips, citric acid, sulfur, rocket motors, a fuse, a 1-pound blast target and two home-made suppressors.

On Tuesday, neighbors told KCTV5 News police asked them to leave their homes while they carried out a search warrant at Johnson’s duplex.

“You have to go. We take you everywhere, but it’s just not safe for you to be here,” neighbor Paula Malm said of her conversation with the police.

The Kansas City, Missouri, Bomb and Arson Squad assisted Lenexa police Tuesday to ensure Johnson’s duplex could be safely entered to search for evidence. “Any piece of evidence that would give us an idea of what led to the Lenexa shooting,” said Danny Chavez, public information officer for the Lenexa Police Department. “We believe he was previously in a romantic relationship with the female victim.”
