Jackie Chan's comedy-action film “Skiptrace” enjoyed a $60 million four-day release in China, where it stood out among other opening films and other films.
The film hit theaters on Thursday (July 21) and grossed $14.7 million on its opening day. According to Ent Group, another $44.0 million was needed in the Friday-Sunday period. That three-day total is just $1 million shy of the $44.7 million worldwide total for “The Legend of Tarzan,” which secured the worldwide weekend win, according to U.S. tracking service ComScore.
The success of Skiptrace not only confirms Chan's enduring star power, but also essentially justifies his role as a driving force behind the scenes as a producer. Chan has personally promoted this buddy comedy and China travelogue project for many years, enduring the changes of financier, co-star and director.
Ultimately, “Skiptrace” was directed by Renny Harlin, who now lives in Beijing. Harlin, who hails from Finland by way of Hollywood, has a forward deal with a Chinese financier and is planning his next film with Alibaba Pictures Group.
In China, “Tarzan” opened on Tuesday (July 19) and topped the charts for two days. During the Friday-Sunday period, “Tarzan” earned $12.0 million. The six-day cumulative value is $22.5 million. On the days the two front-runners competed, “Skiptrace” had a market share of over 56%, while “Tarzan” had 16%, according to CBO.
Third place went to Friday's opening film, the Japanese animated film “Doraemon: Nobita and the Birth of Japan.” An impressive $8.14 million was raised in the first three days.
In fourth place was “One Night Only,” a crime comedy starring Aaron Kwok, who also topped previous chart-topper “Cold War.” “One Night” grossed $3.89 million in three days
Fifth was “Big Fish and Begonia,” a Chinese animated film in its third week. The company managed $3.40 million for a total value of $79.7 million in 17 days.
“Cold War,” the Hong Kong crime action film, lost the most theaters, making way for “Skiptrace.” As a result, it plummeted from first to sixth place and its weekend earnings plummeted from $15.8 million to $3.02 million. After 17 days, the value stands at $96.8 million.
“When Larry Met Mary” was another steep fall. Seventh place cost $1.92 million. After 10 days, the total value is $25.7 million. “Chinese animated film “Bobby The Hedgehog” has grossed $1 million in its first three days.
Baahubali, the hit 2015 South Indian fantasy action film, opened on Saturday (July 23) and clocked an opening gross of $540,000 in two days. That was enough for ninth place.
