Japanese panel discusses joint custody system

A government panel on Tuesday agreed to hold talks on introducing a joint custody system for divorced parents to allow them to share custody of their children.

The Legislative Council’s Family Law Subcommittee, which advises the Minister for Justice, met behind closed doors on the issue. According to sources, many of its members said there was a need to revise the current law, which invariably prohibits divorced parents from sharing custody of their children.

In November last year, the sub-committee produced an interim report setting out proposals for introducing a joint custody system and maintaining the current system of giving sole custody to one parent after a divorce.
