Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner reach a temporary custody agreement: Everything we know

Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner have found a temporary solution to their custody dispute.

The couple, who were married for four years before filing for divorce on September 5, had a successful mediation that resulted in a custody plan for their two daughters that extends through 2024. Mediation is ongoing, according to court documents obtained by Yahoo Entertainment: “The parties anticipate an amicable resolution of all disputes between them.”

The legal documents set out the exact custody plan for the daughters Willa (3) and Delphine (1). The Game of Thrones star – who filed a federal lawsuit against Jonas on September 21, accusing her ex-singer of “unlawfully withholding” the children after refusing to hand over their passports so she could take them to England, has She currently has custody.

From October 9th to 21st, the children – who have citizenship of both the United States, her birthplace, and Turner’s native Britain – will be in the actress’s care and she may temporarily travel with them to England or within the 50 states.

Jonas and Turner are also navigating their divorce proceedings in a second case.

Here’s everything we know…

5th September

He files for dissolution of the marriage in Miami, where they shared a home until recently. The documents state that the marriage was “irretrievably broken.”

Her team claims she found out about the divorce filing through the media.

September 6th

In a post shared on both their Instagram accounts, Turner and Jonas – who were married by an Elvis impersonator in Las Vegas in 2019, followed by a second ceremony shortly after in France – said they had “mutually decided to to end our marriage amicably.” They also criticized “speculative narratives” surrounding the split, particularly that she was partying while he cared for the children, and asked for privacy for their girls.

21st September

The federal lawsuit, filed in federal court in New York City, alleges that Jonas is withholding the passports of her children, who have dual U.S. and U.K. citizenship. The British actress claims they moved to England in the spring after giving up their Miami home on the market, with the intention of making it their “forever home.” She began production on Joan, with filming lasting from May to September. So Jonas took the kids on tour around the US because he was the parent who had more free time. They entered into contract on a new home there in July and planned to close in December. They separated after a heated fight in August. Turner claims their plan was to pick up the children in New York in mid-September and bring them back to England while Jonas continued touring. She claims they met in New York after his proposal on September 17 and he refused to release the children’s passports for the planned trip, leading to their international custody battle in the US and the United Kingdom Kingdom submitted

Jonas criticizes her “misleading” claims.

“After several conversations with Sophie, Joe initiated divorce proceedings in Florida, as Florida is the relevant jurisdiction for the case,” read a statement from Jonas’ camp. “Sophie knew Joe wanted to file for divorce. The Florida court has already issued an order prohibiting both parents from relocating the children. This order was served on Sophie on September 6th….”

“Joe and Sophie had a warm meeting in New York last Sunday when Sophie came to New York to be with the children. “You have been with her since that meeting,” it continues. “Joe’s impression of the meeting was that they had agreed to work together on amicable co-parenting.”

He claimed 24 hours later that Turner said she wanted to bring the children to the UK permanently. If he had complied, he would have violated the Florida court’s order, they said. He said he agreed with the children splitting their time between the US and Britain, but they were American citizens and had lived primarily in the US

“This is an unfortunate legal disagreement about a marriage that is sadly ending,” the statement said. “Using terms like ‘kidnapping’ is at best misleading and at worst a serious abuse of the legal system. The children were not kidnapped. After being in Joe’s care for the past three months with the consent of both parties, the children are currently with their mother. Sophie is only making this claim to move the divorce proceedings to the UK and permanently remove the children from the US.”

Jonas called on Turner to “reconsider her strict legal position and take a more constructive and private approach.”

The couple is making a temporary decision to keep the children in the southern and eastern counties of New York – including New York City, Long Island and the Hudson Valley – while a permanent arrangement is worked out. Turner moves into her pal Taylor Swift’s rental property. The ex-partners take turns taking custody of the girls.

A letter from Jonas to the homeowner of the Wallingford, Oxford, England, where they have a contract has been leaked. In it, Jonas talked about how he and Turner decided to look for a “permanent home” there. “We could see that your family really enjoyed life here and we can imagine our children growing up here and making this our forever home. I really believe Sophie and I can take care of her.” [redacted names] and for many years to pay homage to the magic you have created here,” it reads.

A divorce lawyer tells Yahoo that a child’s legal residency depends on where the children have lived for the past six months. Turner tries to argue that they have made Britain their home since April.

Lawyers for the ex-partners appear in federal court in Manhattan for a preliminary hearing to determine custody. The trial date is set for January 2nd. The lawyers tell the judge that they will be negotiating their divorce and custody simultaneously starting the next day. It was also announced that an in-person divorce hearing will be held in Florida on December 14th.

The process, facilitated by a neutral mediator, is designed to help divorcing spouses reach mutually beneficial agreements regarding the divorce and custody of their children. There is hope that the couple can settle the case and avoid court.

A recent example of a celebrity couple turning to a mediator was when Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen ended their marriage in 2022. They reached an agreement on both property settlements and custody, and their divorce was finalized on the same day they announced their separation.

Oct. 7

The ex-partners’ lawyers sent a letter to the judge saying they participated in “productive mediation” from Oct. 4 to 7 and “believe that an amicable resolution of all issues existing between them is imminent.” For now, they have filed a preliminary consent order setting out the dates the children will be with each parent. They also demanded that the trial date they had set be canceled.

Turner was initially held in custody from October 9th to October 21st, with the agreement that she could travel with them to the UK (as well as within the 50 states of the US). You or the nanny must return the children to New York City on the last day and make the transfer to Jonas.

Jonas, who is on tour this fall, will have the children from October 21st to November 2nd. Turner gets them from November 2nd to November 22nd. He will get them back for Thanksgiving (November 22nd to December 16th) and she will have them for the holidays (December 6th to January 7th). That’s as far as they’ve gone for now.

The parties will submit a status letter before December 23rd.
