Kayden's Law, a bill named in memory of a Lower Makefield girl who tragically lost her life in 2018, has been approved by the Pennsylvania state House of Representatives, Dino Ciliberti writes for Patch.

The bill aims to take more measures to protect children in custody cases. The bill's next stop is Gov. Josh Shapiro's desk, where it will officially become law.

The law is named after Kayden Mancuso, a seven-year-old who was tragically killed by her father during court-ordered, unsupervised visitation.

It aims to:

  • Strengthening current factors that judges must consider when making custody and visitation decisions
  • Make sure any custody order contains the necessary safety conditions and restrictions
  • Encourages the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania to conduct training programs for judges and other court personnel on child abuse

Kayden's mother, Kathy Sherlock, fought and advocated for this legislation over the past few years.

“This bill cannot heal the serious wound that Kathy and her family have suffered, but I hope it will provide them with some measure of comfort by protecting our children going forward,” said Pennsylvania State Senator Steve Santarsiero.
