The Kansas City, Missouri Police Department is bringing back its missing persons unit. Chief Stacey Graves announced the move at the last Police Committee meeting. The Missing Persons Unit will operate as part of the Violent Crimes Unit. KCPD’s former missing persons and cold case squad was disbanded by outgoing Police Chief Smith shortly before his retirement in 2022. Graves’ announcement of his return comes almost exactly a year after his dissolution. At the time, Smith said he disbanded the force due to an ongoing shortage of police officers. The former chief reassigned this squad’s detectives to the Homicide and Assault Division. The reformation of the new entity will reinstate officers for missing persons cases. The new squad will officially meet this Sunday, April 16, 2023. KCPD will hold a press conference at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday to discuss the department’s plans in detail. You can report a missing person by dialing 911.
