Lagos courtroom dissolves 30-year marriage over fetishism and infidelity

LAGOS — An Igando customary court in Lagos has dissolved a 30-year-old marriage between a Kayode Akinyade and Iyabode.
In a ruling on Thursday, the court’s president, Mr Koledoye Adeniyi, said the couple’s marriage could no longer last.
Adeniyi therefore dissolved the marriage over allegations of fetishism, disrespect, leaving home, infidelity, quarrels and danger to life.
He decided that after carefully examining the allegations and counter-allegations from the litigants, love was no more.
However, the court found nothing wrong with the petitioner marrying another woman, saying it was permissible under African tradition, particularly where the parties were married under local law and tradition.
It said the parties’ evidence did not show that at any point the Kayode did anything to authorize his wife to return her efforts to support him as his first wife.
It frowned upon how the defendant had left her marital residence for years without her husband’s consent.
On the question of fetishism, the court said it believed in the effectiveness of spells because it was a common court.
However, the plaintiff could not prove this to the defendant.
The Nigeria News Agency (NAN) reports that Kayode took his wife to court, accused her of fetishism and threatened his life. (NAN)
