Aurora, Colorado (KCNC) – Every year in the city of Aurora, thousands of cars are stolen. Despite an increase in the thefts of the motor vehicle during the Covid 19 pandemic, the city of Aurora has recorded a decline in recent years.

In 2024, the Aurora police officers responded to 3,545 reports on stolen vehicles that had dropped in 2023 from 5,223 and 6,781 in 2022. As of March 31, the Aurora police department received 596 stolen vehicle reports.

In order to reduce this number even more, the Aurora police authority has worked with the city of Aurora and the Colorado Auto Theft Prevention Authority to start a free program that aims to prevent vehicle theft by visible deterrent and GPS persecution.

According to the police, the vehicle's owner can track his car on the phone as soon as the GPS tracking device has been inserted into your vehicle. Only the driver has access to it. The Aurora police can only pursue it with permission. If your car is stolen, the mapping system can help to find it.

In this measurement rotrack program, the drivers receive an Airtag for iPhone users and a chipolo for Android users. You will receive one per car with a border of two cars per household. You will also receive two safety stickers. Place one on the window of your driver and the other on the passenger side. It is like the signs they see in front of the yards and warns the thieves that their car is being followed.

This tracking device works with most vehicles. It is important to never let out the tracker. Place it in a place where nobody can find it. Name your kit according to your license plate number or the last six digits of your VIN. When your vehicle is stolen, follow it through GPS, but call 911 when it is. Never go on your vehicle.

“Don't try to follow the vehicle yourself,” Joe Moylan, spokesman for the Aurora Police Department. “Leave it to the law enforcement authorities to pursue their vehicle.

Also always make sure that your doors are closed, park in well-lit areas and if you have a ring doorbell camera, park in front of it.
