Malian singer arrested in Italy over custody dispute

Award-winning Malian singer Rokia Traore was scheduled to perform at the Colosseum in Rome on Sunday (June 23), but was arrested beforehand and the event was cancelled.

Singer and Belgian playwright Jan Goosens have filed suit in France, Mali and Belgium to obtain sole custody of their daughter.

According to reports, the verdicts awarded custody to one of them.

A Belgian court ruled last year that Traoré had failed to hand over “a child to the person with custody”.

Traore was arrested in Paris in 2020 on a European arrest warrant before violating a ban on leaving France.

Since her legal problems, Rokia Traoré, who lives with her child in Mali, has appeared less frequently in Europe.
