By Apoorva Jayachandran: A Hyderabad court on Monday sentenced a man to life in prison for setting fire to his wife in 2014, three years after their marriage. The accused is said to have molested his wife about dowry and also accused her of infidelity.
The defendant, identified as Pidugu Sudhakar, married Kavitha in March 2011. At the time of the marriage, the groom received 13 Tulas gold ornaments, a Passion Pro motorbike, and net cash and household items worth Rs 8 lakhs, as per the customs and traditions of the community.
The two lived happily ever after for a year before Sudhakar started pestering Kavitha for extra dowry. He also accused her of infidelity.

In November 2014, Sudhakhar went to his home at around 5pm and started an argument with his wife about the dowry. In a fit of rage, Sudhakar poured kerosene on his wife and set her on fire. When her neighbors heard Kavitha’s cries for help, they rushed to her rescue and put out the flame. Sudhakar also suffered some burn injuries in the incident.
Kavitha was taken to a hospital for treatment but later succumbed to her injuries.
Kavitha’s father filed a complaint against Sudhakar and a case was registered in November 2014. During the course of the investigation, the police visited the crime scene and conducted a panchanama at the crime scene. Sudhakar was arrested in December 2014 and remanded in custody.
Eight years after his arrest, the Hyderabad court on Monday sentenced the accused to life imprisonment and fined him 20,000 rupees.
