PETALING JAYA, March 20 – The Department of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM) is set to discuss with relevant ministries and agencies the proposed measure to freeze the bank accounts of men who do not pay alimony to their ex-wives.
Minister Datuk Seri Rina Mohd Harun, who welcomed the government’s announcement on the action, said her ministry will try to implement the measure this year in cooperation with those ministries and agencies.
“Based on the information we have received, many ex-husbands do not pay child support. Through the announcement, the ex-wives can get it,” she told reporters following the launch of the new image of Pusrawi Maternity Hospital and Polyclinic in Kota Damansara here today.
“Ex-wives who are not being paid child support can complain through the Talian Kasih line at 15999 or the other KPWKM platforms,” she added.
Yesterday, at the conclusion of the debate at the party’s 2021 General Assembly, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who is also UMNO Vice-President, announced that men’s bank accounts would be frozen if they violated the court’s alimony order ex-wives there.
He said it was among matters decided by the government to protect women, including court cases won by women in their alimony claims.
In addition, he said, widows would be allowed to work from home during their iddah (waiting period) (four months and 10 days) after the husband’s death, while employers could not force them to work in the office until the end of the mourning period Iddah regarding their situation.
“This is a welcome move as there are many things a woman has to take care of after losing her husband, such as children and home,” Rina said in response to the move.
“The Covid-19 pandemic has proven that we are equally capable of working from home,” she added. — Bernama
