Moi's grandson Collins Toroitich is charged with contempt in the custody battle

Former President Daniel Moi's grandson, Collins Kibet, is facing contempt charges brought by his ex-wife Gladys Jeruto Tagi.

The charges stem from alleged failure to comply with court orders regarding the support of her two children. Nakuru Chief Magistrate Kipkurui Kibellion has summoned Collins Kibet Toroitich Moi to explain his failure to comply with court orders. Last year, the court ordered Kibet to cover the children's education, medical needs and entertainment costs amounting to Sh1.5 million per year.

Ms Tagi claims Kibet neglected his responsibilities and left her to bear the financial burden alone, despite the court's orders. According to Ms Tagi, since the court order dated June 2, 2022, she has spent a total of Sh2.8 million on the children, covering their education, medical bills and entertainment for almost two years. Court documents reveal that Ms Tagi allocated Sh1.2 million for educational expenses, Sh600,000 for medical expenses and Sh1 million for entertainment.

She now demands that Kibet reimburse these costs and fulfill his fatherly duties. She asks the court to hold him in contempt and impose punishments. Chief Judge Benjamin Limo ruled in favor of Ms. Tagi and ordered Kibet to assume full responsibility for the children's education, health insurance and part of their entertainment costs.

Ms Tagi claims she has been solely responsible for her children since 2012 and claims Kibet abandoned her. Kibet's denial of being the father was proven false by a court-ordered DNA test. He then agreed to provide the children with NHIF insurance, citing financial difficulties. The case is scheduled to be heard on February 21.
