Pop star Shakira and Barcelona defender Gerard Pique split earlier this month after being in a relationship for 11 years.

The Barcelona defender and the Barranquilla singer have been hailed as one of the strongest couples in the entertainment world. Although the couple was not married, fans dreamed of seeing them together for much longer. And now reports suggest the real reason for the breakup wasn’t Pique’s infidelity, but instead money became a factor in the couple’s rift.

Speaking to Spanish media EsDiario, Roberto Garcia – who had been dating one of Shakira’s sisters – revealed the singer’s split with Pique was due to money. In the interview, he explained that the couple seemed to have a perfect relationship, but in fact, the problems between them started months ago and the real reason was purely economic.

Garcia claimed Pique once demanded a substantial sum of cash from the Colombian singer to invest in other ventures, but Shakira refused as her parents disagreed – and they are the ones who have the final say on her financial situation. From that moment the relationship broke up and began constant fights that separated them.

“According to what a person close to me told me, there was an economic issue between the two of them. Allegedly, Piqué asked Shakira for money for an investment and the singer’s family has refused to give it to him. They prefer not to mix their money and they keep the family economy at 50%,” said Roberto Garcia.

Previously, reports had emerged that Shakira found out about Pique’s alleged infidelity after hiring private investigators to investigate the footballer’s movements. Journalists Laura Fa and Lorena Vazquez, who first revealed the love scandal, claimed that La Traviesa, a famous Barcelona nightclub, was allegedly where Pique and the woman met.
