Mumbai man stabs wife after custody dispute; Arrested – Voice for Men

Divorce and separation can sometimes be very bitter. Most often, things get worse when children are kept away from a separated parent. Certainly violence in such situations can never be justified by either parent.

In a recent case reported from Mumbai, a man was arrested for attempting to murder his ex-wife.

Case:

Mohammad Rafiq Sheikh (38) was married to Parveen and the couple had one child.

According to a report in TOI, Shaikh and Parveen had separated and the latter then married another man named Anand Harijan (28).

The formerly estranged couple had a dispute over the custody of their child and on February 9, Shaikh visited Parveen's home in Malwani in Mumbai where the matter escalated to the extent that the estranged husband stabbed his former wife.

Attempted murder

According to the complaint filed by Harijan, Shaikh insulted Parveen after an argument. At around 6 p.m. he tried to strangle her from behind and rained down blows on her. He also attacked her with scissors in the face and neck. Parveen suffered injuries on his right cheek and neck, TOI reported.

Harijan rushed Parveen to a hospital.

Police statement

The accused is unemployed and lives in Malwani. Shaikh was arrested under Section 307 of IPC.

Voice For Men India Opinion

  • It is very easy to blog and encourage estranged couples to maintain peace and balance with their children after divorce
  • Although local realities may vary from case to case, spouses should not prevent contact between the child and the noncustodial parent unless the latter is a convicted criminal or is physically violent
  • Even if the father is unemployed or financially unstable, this cannot be a reason to prevent him from meeting his children
  • Last month we witnessed a horrific incident in which a… AI startup founder Suchana Seth murdered her 4-year-old son in Goa because she did not want to allow communication between her child and her estranged husband
  • Divorce is not a taboo and every person has the right to choose their life partner, even after a failed marriage
  • However, when children are involved, the spouses must reach a joint agreement in which nothing really changes about the children's upbringing other than their parents living in two different households
