Multi-award-winning musician David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has sued the mother of his first child, Sophia Momodu, demanding custody of the child, Imade.
In an application filed by his lawyers Dr. Olaniyi Arije, Okey Barrah and others on April 17, 2024 at the Lagos State High Court, Davido wants the court to “make an order granting the applicant joint custody of Miss Imade Adeleke.”
Alternatively, the singer asked the court for “an order granting the applicant full and unrestricted access to Miss Imade.”
In the suit, bearing the reference LD/1587PMC/2024, Mrs Sophia Momodu is the sole defendant. The plaintiff's application is supported by a 44-paragraph affidavit filed by Davido himself.
According to the musician, the relationship with Momodu ended several years ago, but only after the birth of their daughter Imade on May 14, 2015, and they both have to take care of the child as biological father and mother.
He pointed out that, according to Davido, he was responsible for paying all of his daughter's school fees to ensure she gets the best education possible and to ensure that all her educational needs are met smoothly. He also provided money for the rent of the apartment where the defendant lives with the daughter.
Davido further stated that out of love for Imade, he bought a 200 million naira apartment in a gated community with a swimming pool and 24-hour electricity and water supply in Oniru, Victoria Island, Lagos and offered it to the mother, but she allegedly rejected the offer and instead demanded that he continue to pay 5,000,000 naira annually towards the rental of a property as his own contribution towards the daughter's accommodation.
To ensure that Imade's interests were properly taken into account, Davido said: “I purchased a Range Rover Sport Utility Vehicle for the child and the defendant to meet their transportation needs, including transporting the child to and from school, etc.”
He added that sometime last year, he received a call from his daughter's school saying that Imade had been absent for two weeks. When he asked Momodu about this, she replied: “She started making excuses and complained that the Range Rover SUV was not in good condition but refused to inform me.”
He added: “To complement the information on the condition of the vehicle, I have provided another vehicle, a Highlander SUV, and also the sum of 5.8 million naira demanded by her for the repair of the Range Rover SUV. This means that there are now two vehicles in the care and use of the defendant and our daughter.”
To ensure that their child's interests are adequately protected, Davido said: “I have also committed to paying for our child's living expenses and nanny, medical care, insurance, and the cost of regular international travel and tickets.”
“Despite my efforts on behalf of my daughter, the defendant continues to make outlandish and unrealistic demands to frustrate me,” the singer added.
Listing the other demands allegedly made by Momodu, he said: “The defendant demands, among other things, that I pay the nanny she hired an amount of $800 per month and that the total amount of $19,600 per year be paid as a lump sum.”
Davido claimed that despite contributing to a better life for her daughter, the defendant “continued to show unjustified cruelty towards me and caused me so much pain.”
Davido and Sophia have often been at loggerheads since their separation.
