Seasoned actor Naumaan Ijaz is often reluctant to make controversial comments. The actor, otherwise acclaimed for his remarkable accomplishments and projects, recently came under fire for his latest project, Dunk. The famous star has worked on several hit shows in a career spanning over two decades.
While he has always made headlines for his acting skills, it seems like Ijaz has been caught in one controversy after another for some time. Last year, an old interview with the Sang-e-Mar Mar star made the rounds on social media where he “jokingly” spoke of being unfaithful to his wife.
But Ijaz noted in a recent interview with Independent Urdu that he is not “staying away from controversy, but from false remarks”.
“We [actors] Don’t create controversies, they are created for personal interests. We’re very simple people, “commented the actor.” What people don’t really understand is the context of a comment. We just want to point out what we think is the thought behind a particular remark. It really depends on how you think. But I don’t mind. Say what you want as I’m not the one providing clarifications. “
The outrage over dunk:
In his latest internet turmoil, Dunk, Ijaz plays the role of Professor Humayun, who was wrongly accused of sexual harassment. The uproar was tremendous when audiences questioned the need to air a show on false allegations (which is rare) while remaining mum on the cases proven in court.
However, Ijaz called out the critics, saying the subject should have been criticized sooner than the actors. Dunk, he said, was based on a true incident that happened in Lahore in 2019.
An English-speaking professor at Government MAO College died of suicide in a case accused of harassment. Professor Afzal Mehmood reportedly committed suicide after his wife separated from him and the university administration refused to issue him with a clearance certificate, even after harassment allegations were proven false.
“When we accuse someone of a crime in this tomb, we often forget the impact. We forget the impact it would have on the accused, his family,” said the Dar Si Jati Hai Sila star. “Not everyone has strong willpower, some are very sensitive. He couldn’t take it and died of suicide.”
Regarding the criticism, the actor believes that “nobody tried to sabotage the #MeToo movement with the show”.
“Nobody should molest anyone – regardless of their gender. There should be adequate laws, but who will decide whether the allegations are true or not? The show shows whether the #MeToo movement has been abused. It would be wrong to say the movements are not manipulated, “he added. “We have black sheep in society who manipulate such meaningful movements. Therefore, it is extremely important to properly investigate whether a person is innocent or guilty before passing the judgment on. In this country there should be punishment for those who falsely accusing someone. “
The infidelity:
Last September, Ijaz’s interview with Iffat Omar went viral. The actor, who doesn’t end up in hot waters often, spoke to the host about the “secret to a successful marriage”, who has been married for about 25 years. Omar mentioned that artists are hopeless romantics, which he agreed to, and when asked if he had ever lost his heart anywhere else, he replied, “Beinteha (countless times).”
Ijaz said he was not responsible to anyone but his god and wife. “They can think what they want, I don’t care. I don’t care what people think,” he said. “I just want to say, do people think that a man like me who is astute would be talking about infidelity in the air if I knew my wife was going to see them? The interview was taped a year and a half ago. Back then mixed everyone got into the joke and praised the same show. I’m fluent in sarcasm. I won’t give any justification. “
