ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) – Rockford’s Family Peace Center and Winnebago County are working together to fund a legal aid fund for domestic violence survivors.
County board member Angela Fellars said she has found there is a high demand for legal aid in domestic situations and the fund will help victims secure custody of their children early in the process, hoping to break the barriers reduce what people might encounter when attempting to exit an abuser situation.
Experts say financial abuse accounts for 99% of domestic violence cases.
Jennifer Cacciapaglia of the Mayor’s Office of Domestic and Community Violence Prevention said Fellars is the mastermind behind the campaign.
“We are here today because Board Member Fellars and her leadership truly recognized the need for additional support for survivors of domestic and sexual violence who need to be challenged in court,” Cacciapaglia said.
She added that to date, the Family Peace Center has helped over 11,000 survivors.
