Since Novak Djokovic faces Matteo Berrettini in the Wimbledon final planned for July 11, the anticipation for the tennis professional has never been greater. But despite his worldwide fame and accolades, his biggest fan may still be his wife Jelena, who has been in love with him every day since she loved him in high school years ago.
With a record of 325 weeks in first place in June of this year, Djokovic’s excellence in this sport is undeniable. Today the Serbian tennis player is just one Grand Slam victory away from Roger Federer and Raphael Nadal. And at home he is also the boss-father – his wife Jelena raves about it in interviews. But this glorious marriage of seven years and going was not without scandals and controversy, and some people even went so far as to offer payments so that a Serbian model could seduce the tennis player.

Present at every single game, always alongside the Balkan champion, Jelena Ristic met her beloved Nole in 2005 when they were both in high school. The dreamy teenage romance soon saw its fair share of a crisis when Djokovic dived into the deep end of trying to establish himself as a professional tennis player. The couple defied every hurdle and became husband and wife.
Since there was not enough money for expensive trips and Djokovic traveled a lot to advance into the big leagues, wanderlust crept into their relationship. “Our meeting was almost like science fiction,” Jelena told Hello Magazine about the start of her advertisement. “I was a student who could barely make ends meet, and he was a very young tennis player who didn’t have any money to spend on expensive trips either. Airplanes were completely out of reach for us back then.”
When the tennis champion made a name for himself, Jelena was working in a demanding job at an oil company. “At a certain point Novak said to me, ‘Darling, we can’t go on like this,'” added Jelena. “I was almost always confined to the office. It would not have been possible for our relationship to flourish if I had stayed there, ”Jelena told the point of sale. So they did what every power couple does and decided to overcome all odds. “We invented and developed these plans, how we can meet, how our relationship works,” said Jelena, and in September 2013 Djokovic kidnapped her for an elaborate offer at the Couvent des Minimes Hotel in Provence.
Djokovic asked the question during the helicopter flight to the venue and married Jelena on July 10, 2014 at the Aman Sveti Stefan Resort in Montenegro, just days after defeating Federer at Wimbledon that year. At the time, Jelena was pregnant with the couple’s first child, Stefan, who arrived in October 2014. In September 2017, the couple was joined by another bundle of joy, a girl named Tara.
“He never gets tired and even when he is at home he watches videos and analyzes everything that happened, analyzes the next opponents and I have to say he is really a great professional,” Jelena told the tabloid Kurir, describing the husband that she has seen and grown old with for the past nearly 20 years. She also noted that his work never stopped Djokovic from being a great father. “Novak is a wonderful father and plays his role very well. Of course, unfortunately, he helps with children as best he can, because he is a person with many obligations and great responsibility. I help him and together we are a great team. “
When she talked about who in the family takes the big calls, at least when it comes to food, Jelena spoke about how the couple got vegan. “His eating habits? Well, he’s a great perfectionist and knows his body very well,” she said in an interview. “He didn’t go vegan under my influence, he’s a champion on and off the pitch and no one can force him to do anything. We’re a team, we explore everything together and in fact he was the first to go vegan. I’m fine and that’s always my goal, but each of us does what we want, our children always have the choice, it is obvious that I had to simplify the work in his role and take care not to stress him further to prepare. “
But it’s not just the eating habits that give your kids a choice. As the little offspring of a world star athlete, one unnecessarily expects to follow in their footsteps. Stefan, who will be 7 years old this year, has already expressed an interest in the sport and allegedly plays regularly with his father. Even so, it’s still too early for the couple to purposely steer them in that direction.
“Look, I’ll give him (Stefan) all the space and all the time he needs in the world,” revealed Djokovic in an interview with Channel Nine. “I really want him and my daughter to really express a sincere desire to hit the racket and the ball and just hit the court or the wall. I would be more than happy and excited to help them with their tennis careers and trips, but it’s very early to talk about it, you know, says my wife. “
The other kind of remarks Djokovic often has to make in public are rumors about his marriage. After his poor performance at Wimbledon 2017, when Jelena was absent from the stands for the first time, speculation surfaced that an alleged divorce was the reason for the loss. The reason for Jelena’s absence was her pregnancy, as she was expecting Tara at the time.
But people were so obsessed with the failure of the marriage that Serbian model Natalija Scekic was allegedly contacted by people who offered her 60,000 euros to film herself seducing Djokovic, reports Svet Scandal. Scekic denied the proposal and the Djokovics emerged stronger than ever from the turmoil. Sixteen years, countless hard times and two beautiful children later, the couple are happily married and have invested plenty of money in the Novak Djokovic Foundation, which Jelena heads as CEO.
