Officials of the Brooklyn Park say that almost half of the missing persons report are tied to group homes
Brooklyn Park, Minn. (Fox 9) – – The Brooklyn Park police read the comments on social media. They know that people are wondering why it suddenly reports an increase in missing persons.
“There are a number of feedback,” says the deputy head of the boss Elliot Faust, “But what I hear and see a lot is what is going on in the Brooklyn Park? Why are there so many missing people? Are people torn from our streets?”
The answer is no. It amounts to increased transparency in a city with a growing number of group houses.
More group houses, more missing people
According to the numbers:
The Brooklyn Park had reports from 194 missions from “Congregate Living Facilities”, also known as group houses in 2024.
These made up for 45% of all missing and out of control this year.
They did not always publish them on social media because they were often residents who were not seen as a danger to the public that had just been walking. However, houses still have to report.
In the past five years, of 1,936 mission persons and outline cases that were reported to the police, people who had been reported to have been missed more than one.
In one case, there have been 33 reports for a single group house since 2020.
Public transparency
What we know:
The deputy chief Elliot Faust says that a recent change in the guidelines in accordance with the state guidelines means that each report is now published.
“No, we don't have this crazy problem if we miss people who have only appeared in the past two weeks,” he says to Fox 9.
The reason why they have not published all reports in the past, he says, “is that most of these people return within two to three hours.”
In the case of mental health problems or medication problems, however, there is concern that even if you have disappeared for a few hours, there could be a risk of your own security.
Group house concerns for the city
They deeper:
As Fox 9 previously reported, Brooklyn Park is concerned about the increasing number of group houses in the city, which also brings a larger number of registered sex offenders.
The reason for the ascent is that the city has no restrictions on the location in which these houses can be placed, e.g. B. near schools, churches and parks.
The city hopes to change its regulations, but in the meantime there are more group houses come to Brooklyn Park. And with it more missing persons among residents who even migrate briefly and trigger a police report that taxes the city's resources.
“Our city has recorded a drastic increase in the number of congregate care facilities in recent years,” says Faust. “This number climbs every year and reports our missing person.”
