House Bill 14 would set a standard in child custody cases where the parents would essentially receive a fifty-fifty split when custody is at stake. The bill aims to eliminate the choice some children may have to make when choosing which parent to spend the most time with. Concerns have been raised about the bill, particularly how it would tie the court’s hands in custody cases.

“So the fear is, if we don’t allow the courts to hear evidence about this particular child, this particular family situation, and then make decisions related to that child, we take that away from the hearing officials and they can’t focus on that what is best for this child. I think tying the court’s hands is very, very dangerous and it worries me about the children,” said attorney Claire Mackey.

House Bill 14 will now go to the Ohio House for a vote.
